About our village
Medieval History and Quaint Country Charm
The Relais Mira Peis is located in the center of the medieval town of Mirepoix, in the Ariège Department of France.
Mirepoix has been a cultural and economic center of the region since the 13th century. It is renowned for having one of the finest surviving arcaded market squares in France, dating from medieval times, and for its impressive Cathedral of St. Maurice.
Today, Mirepoix is a vibrant, enchanting town full of quintessentially French cafés, small restaurants, shops featuring local artisans, classic bakeries, cheese shops, and antique markets.
Sites you can’t miss include:
The open-air Monday Market. This market happens every Monday throughout the spring and summer months and is a local legend, filling the city center with vendors of organic produce; prepared food; artisanal cheeses, honey, and cured meats; and other specialties like handmade gifts, pottery, and baskets. Sometimes you may even find a baby goat or rabbit!
The Cathedral of St. Maurice. It boasts the second-widest Gothic arch in Europe, a massive pipe organ, and stunning stained glass. The Cathedral was restored by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc himself in the 19th century, who also restored Notre Dame de Paris and Mont Saint Michel.
Regional attractions and activities
Adventure and heritage at your fingertips
The larger region, also called Occitania or the Midi-Pyréneés, is home to several UNESCO World Heritage sites including the fortress city of Carcassonne, the industrial wonder of the Canal du Midi, and multiple routes of the famed Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage.
The region is known as the heart of the Cathares (pronounced “Kat-AHR”), a Christian Gnostic sect active between the 12th-14th centuries which were persecuted during the Albigensian Crusades. Though their story is difficult, the Cathares left incredible castles perched high on mountaintops and cliffs, known as the Châteaux cathares, which are breathtaking to visit today.
